Our world is becoming home to more and more robots every day, driving us around, cleaning our homes, performing medical surgeries and even (according to some) threatening our jobs.
While robots make certain aspects of our lives a lot easier, there is always the lurking possibility that our mechanized helpers will at some point turn on us: think HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Skynet’s Terminators or the self-driving car involved in the fatal crash which killed a woman in Arizona last year. How do we define laws to govern the ‘decisions’ made by robots, their interactions with humans and with other robots. Given sufficient ‘intelligence’, can a robot get married? Can a robot kick another robot?
