Discussion: Art for art’s sake

How to define art is a controversial topic in philosophy. For example, Plato thinks that the arts are representational, or mimetic. Hegel thinks the best artworks convey a certain type of beauty – the perceptual appearance or expression of absolute truth.

For some, art inspires by evoking emotions and creating experiences beyond the realm of normal communication. For others, it’s art for art’s sake, beautiful art in itself is inspiring.

What does art signify for you? Should art and literature be purely aesthetic or have a deeper meaning.
